My Day Of The Dead Make-Up Look

Why hello you irresistably beautiful human beings.

You guys seemed to enjoy my Halloween Costumes That Are Everyday Clothes Too post, so I thought I’d share one of my Halloween looks in all of its not-so-glorious-glory.

I don’t know if you guys remember the October itenary I shared with you all, but my best friend and I had a Day Of The Dead themed party last Saturday and, being the lazy miscreants we are, we both somehow forgot to buy/organise any sort of costumes. Cue the last-minute dash to get dressed and do makeup. Let me just point out: she’s a bloody make-up artist in training – and not like “beauty” makeup; special effects and costume makeup. It’s really cool, she’s very talented.

But I, with my limited-if-any make-up skills and practically non-existent makeup bag, was at a distinct disadvantage when she brought her college makeup kit to my door. (And bloody left it here too. It’s massive and is cluttering up my room. I’m bitter.)

Usually, she’d help me out (Leila’s good like that), but we were on a serious time limit – originally, we’d planned to get there for 12, except we then realised that it finished at 2 (repeat: a party/event/whatever in London finished at 2am. What?) so we had to rush to leave early to make the most of our Β£28 (each) tickets. Okay, yes, it’s not dreadfully expensive, but Ministry of Sound was Β£9 and that doesn’t finish at 2 in the fucking morning. Seriously, guys, I know this doesn’t sound like an issue (and in the grand scheme of things, considering climate change, The Donald, and mass murderers it isn’t, but considering people spend their whole lives aspiring to live in London I feel like, as Londoners, we should live up to this sacred title withΒ parties that finish later than 2am. I’m done ranting now, I promise.) but . . . public transport is better at 6am than it is at 3.

So she had to do her makeup and I had to do mine. Which, in the grand scheme of things, worked out better because it’s hard to write a self-deprecating post about something you didn’t do yourself. You ready? Let’s go.

The look was really simple, just me drawing on my face with red and black eyeliner. (Whoever said diamonds were a girl’s best friend clearly had not discovered the power of a good winged liner.) My skin doesn’t really take well to an overload of make-up so I didn’t do any contouring or face paint. I did colour in the circle over my eye socket with a darker mix of organge and purple eyeshadow.

Personally, I don’t think I did too badly – my favourite part has to be the lips. You can’t see them very well in the photos (bloody typical, really) but I created an almost ombre effect with red lipstick, very watery black eyeliner and a touch of highlighter. I know, I know – the one time I bother to do makeup and I don’t photograph it properly. I’m sorry, okay?

And here is the finished look! If any of you are getting a weird, niggling feeling of “hmm…that looks ever-so-slightly familiar” it’s because I actually featured this dress in my Halloween Costumes That Are Normal Clothes Too video – and if you’ve managed to escape seeing that tragedy thus far, sorry to be be the bearer of bad news but it’s being inserted down below. Just think: however painful it is to watch it was way more painful to film and edit. I’m a writer by nature; videos go against the grain.

By now, you may be wondering how the event went. Was it worth the last minute dash? I mean, aside from the fact it was a night out with my best friend (and therefore, even if the journey we make is only downstairs to the kitchen for midnight munchies whilst we’re Netflixing, it is always a worthwhile journey), I’m going to say not really. While a fun-ish event, the atmosphere just wasn’t really there – we did meet a few really fun people, but it wasn’t life-changingly amazing.

The performances were great though!

Well, my beautiful people, that is my Day of The Dead outfit/costume/look thing complete! I hope you enjoyed this post and maybe even got a little bit of inspiration from it. What events are you hitting this Halloween? Did you like this look? Would you try something similar? Let me know your thoughts down below! (Unless they’re disturbing or would somehow make me an accessory to crime because I have too much to live for, I can’t be going to prison this early in my life.)

Peace,
