*FINISHED* Top 20 Songs Of 2017 Playlist & MY NEW RECORD PLAYER

by Mia M.

If you've seen this post already, I apologise - I scheduled it out for the wrong day, so it wasn't finished. Some of you lovely people even left comments, which was mortifying because it meant you read it . In all it's bare and unfinished non-glory. I'm sorry. Anyways, it's finished now so... Enjoy!

Hello, my lovely bloggers. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas full of love and delicious food. That said... Christmas is now done and I'm onto New Year.

I just want to take a moment to thank the universe for coming through for me in 2017 and providing me with many blessed opportunities to do exactly what I love most: f*** off the rest of the world and listen to music.

In terms of concerts and festivals, 2017 has been the unrivalled best year of my life. And 2018 is going to be better, fight me. 2017 held:

  • Guns'N'Roses
  • DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL - System of a Down, Steel Panther, Aerosmith, Rob Zombie
  • FIB FESTIVAL - Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Weeknd, Stormzy
  • The Killers

Now, music is an important thing for me; it's a part of me, a balm for the soul. Honestly, I don't think I'm ever much happier than I am at a concert, feeling that electricity and connection . Hearing songs can instantly pour memories into me - Pearl Jam's "Even Flow" or "Rearview Mirror" sends me straight back to a wall in Mexico, overlooking the sea at midnight.

My wonderful parents decided to enable me in this addiction (thank you, spawners, I am eternally grateful that you birthed me and that you continue to sustain my existence) with a record player for Christmas! I know - I screamed too. Want to see it? Of course you do.

So I know I don't usually share playlists (I don't think many of you share my tastes in music; that's the main reason why) but, as 2017 comes to a wrap, I thought I would share my top 25 songs of the year.

Wonderful Wonderful - The Killers

(They haven't released it on Youtube yet, but it's the first song in this album.)

To be fair, I think we all know why this is on my favourites of 2017 - I went to see The Killers live last month and it was amazing . This song sent shivers down my spine hearing it live and I just... it's a favourite of mine now.

Rocket Queen, Guns'N'Roses

Okay, so I have mentioned this so many times on this blog (because it's literally the only thing about me worth anything) but I lost my concert virginity this year to Guns'N'Fucking'Roses. I absolutely love them, I've grown up listening to their music and seeing them live was such an electric experience that I think really shaped me in a lot of ways. I know it sounds really weird (to be fair, I am really weird) but it was such a lightbulb moment for me; something about being in Lisbon and seeing them felt like "yep, this is going to be the rest of my life".

However, appreciation for live music and drive to spend my summers at festivals aside, I also just f***ing loved their performance and a few of their songs that I somewhat overlooked in favour of the obvious ones have been my addictions in 2k17.

The Longest Wave, Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Oh, I cannot describe to you how much I am in love with this song. Red Hot Chilli Peppers are one of my all-time favourite bands (yes, I'm aware I say that about like 15 bands. I have a lot of love to give.) and, while more mellow than their usual stuff, I really liked their latest album... but this song has to be my absolute favourite.

And, yes, I'm still bitter that they didn't play it at Fib.

Kitchen Sink, Twenty One Pilots

Everybody, Logic

I won't lie to you... Logic has been having a moment for me the whole of this year!

One For The Road, Arctic Monkeys

The Crow & The Butterfly, Shinedown

Call Me, Shinedown

Simple Man, Shinedown

Breaking Inside, Shinedown

Okay, I'm counting Shinedown entries as one because I only discovered them in 2017 (hello, late to the party) so I can't be expected to narrow down my choices.

All Night, Beyonce

Advice, Kehlani (oooh….or "Honey"? Oh, I can't decide!)

Hard Times, Paramore ("Rose Coloured Boy" is the second fave off the new album... but it's not quite the 2017 anthem this was for me)

zzThe Man, The Killers

Under Pressure - Logic

I'll be honest here; I'm sure which I prefer - the album version is amazing because you have an entire second part using his voicemails that adds a whole layer of depth to the song... but I love the video!

DNA, Kendrick Lamar

I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, The White Stripes

2017 was the year Jack White and The White Stripes dominated my music; I'd been aware of them both vaguely before, but never really invested any time of attention to them. Well. They taught me.

Lazaretto - Jack White
One More Light - Linkin Park (I prefer Talking To Myself, but in light of Chester Bennington's passing, One More Light has to take the spot.)
Sweatpants - Childish Gambino
Mr Brownstone - Guns'N'Roses

17 Girls, Steel Panther

Right, if you watch that and are immediately horrified... yeah, I see where you're coming from. Steel Panther are a parody comedy group who spoof that typical 80s-rocker lifestyle and they're hilarious . I actually discovered them through Download earlier thsi year - in fact, you can watch the VLOG below. Plus, when they perform this they bring like 200 girls on stage.

Distraction - Kehlani

Tell Me Baby, Red Hot Chilli Peppers

This song and this video just put me in the best mood.

Smile Like You Mean It, The Killers

You're In Love With A Psycho, Kasabian

Okay... this video is probably my favourite music video of 2017. It has Noel Fielding (#bae) in it and it's hilarious; what more could a girl ask for?

Well, with that I feel like I've taken up enough of your time. Have some more record player porn, though, because it's just so pretty .

This post, by the way, was inspired by one of my favourite blogs (and bloggers because Priya is le total babe and she can sing like a damn angel) Have You Heard? wherein Priya shared her top 2017 songs, a la Spotify, and you can find it linked here.

What did you think of my picks? Do we have any music in common? If you're wondering about the distinct lack of women, I tend to favour rock and metal music... and I long ago discovered my rock/metal queens (Amy Lee, Flyleaf, Lacuna Coil) so while they're my old loves, like Panic! At The Disco, they may be all-time favourites but none of them were discovered in 2017. Did you guys find any new songs or artists? And isn't the record player beautiful ? Let me know your thoughts down below!

Peace,
