Hello, beautiful people – it almost feels sacrilegious to even think about Christmas, but here I am planning out my seasonal content. I’ve already got a gift guide drafted and ideas for how to wrap presents pinned to a secret board on Pinterest . . . Your girl may or may not have even been researching some festive recipes to try!
(In my defence, because I know you’re all reading this post in absolute horror right now, the hostel I’m working at right now is beautiful and charming . . . but it’s also in a small town, where things close really early and I’m left with a lot of time on my hands. The free time combined with the fact I have to cook for myself has brought out the inner Betty Crocker in me.)
A big shoutout to Hannah for this idea – I read her Amsterdam posts and was instantly intrigued by her Red Velvet Pancake Experience. (Yes, I’m capitalising it – pancakes are serious business.) Red velvet pancakes? I’d never heard of the concept, but I wanted it.
After a quick Google, I discovered the world of red velvet pancakes and their fluffy stacks. I thought “what a perfect Christmas recipe!”. “Great seasonal content!” “A+** blogging game tactics!”
Naturally, being the impulse-control-less monster that I am, I didn’t wait until Christmas to make these bad boys. I made them in late September and, you know what, sometimes the world gives you exactly what you didn’t know you needed. Because I’m out here planning Christmas – and ignoring Halloween.
Well, guess what colour works for both the birth of Christ and the holiday I assume is dedicated to the brutal murder of someone? Red. (Also, does anyone know where Halloween came from? If it isn’t brutal, violent or at least somewhat disturbing, don’t bother telling me.)
Anyways, long story short: I like pancakes, I liked the idea Hannah introduced of red pancakes and today I’m sharing a recipe for them with you. Okay? Fucking fabulous.
YOU WILL NEED:
- Flour
- Sugar
- Milk
- Egg
- Red food colouring
- Cocoa powder
- White chocolate chips and/or shavings – as the creature of excess that I am, naturally I went for both. And I regret nothing.
(Okay, it may also help to have a pancake recipe on hand because, contrary to popular belief, this post actually . . . isn’t one.)
HOW TO MAKE RED VELVET PANCAKES
Honestly, it’s really simple: in your normal recipe, substitute 2-3 tablespoons of flour for cocoa powder and add red food colouring. That’s it. My wisdom has been imparted.
…
Oh.
You’re still here?
Well, that’s awkward.
Here’s my problem: after years of what could quite honestly be described as a pancake addiction, I’m pretty good at making pancakes. In fact, I’d go so far as to say good. (Bar the time I tried putting Coco Pops in them, but in my defence . . . every food combination sounds weird as hell until you try it and discover it’s actually what you’ve been missing all your life.)
My point is: I’m too lazy to use a recipe anymore, I just kind of eye-measure and add ingredients to change the consistency of the mixture as I go. So any measurements I’d give you would be a lie. Choose literally any pancake recipe off the internet, add red food dye and sub out a few tablespoons of flour for cocoa powder. Boom! Red velvet pancakes, you’re welcome world.
And, with the admittedly tedious link between red and Halloween, I’m going to consider this post seasonal content! This “recipe” is not only yummy, it’s also super ~aesthetic~ and a fun (not to mention easy) way to spice up your traditional pancakes. Or – or – spooky them up!
…
No? I’ve lost you? Yeah, that’s fair – I think my dignity may have just left with you too.
Pin these images for me, babies!
Well, kids, here seems as good a place as any to wrap this post up! I hope you all enjoyed this ‘lil recipe and found it potentially useful/inspiring. While I naturally devised this up entirely for Halloween, I also think this would work super well for Christmas or just as a photo for the ‘gram. Again, thanks to Hannah for the inspiration on this – check out her adventures in Amsterdam!
Have you ever tried red velvet pancakes? Did you like how mine turned out? Would you give this “recipe” a go? Let me know your thoughts down below!
