How To Grow Avocado Plants From Eaten Avo’s!

by Mia M.

. . . if that’s the kind of weird thing you’re into.

Hello, beautiful humans of the internet and welcome back to my dark corner of the web. Today, I’m going to be showing you all how to grow your own avocados! (Well, how to grow your own avocado trees. It’ll take a couple of years for them to grow enough to fruit – but they’ll make a super cute houseplant in the meantime.)

This our little collection of baby avocado trees! (Seriously, guys, get yourselves a partner that likes to garden; Daryl has introduced me to world of propagation and plant cuttings that makes my DIY-heart flutter.) And if you want to see the rest of my cute plants . . . watch my plant tour!

Why, you may ask, should you want to try this? As a massive “fuck you” to the boomers, of course. They said the reason you can’t afford a house is because you like avocado on your toast? Well, your avocados are investments. They’re sustenance – vitamins and a hearty breakfast; then they’re cute houseplants; then they’re cleaning our oxygen and finally ten years down the line they’re growing more food.

What’s your big house doing other than causing pollution, Brenda?

Kidding – try this out because it hits the trifecta of Sunday crafts: it’s easy, it’s cheap and it takes maybe five minutes. Not to mention being my favourite kind of gardening craft – low maintenance and quick-growing.

So what do you need?

  • The pit of an eaten avocado
  • Some toothpicks
  • A jar

And that’s it! See, this is the perfect Sunday craft – have yourself some smashed avo toast for breakfast and grow yourself an avocado tree before lunch.

How To Plant

1. First off, clean your avocado pit. Daryl decided to peel his too, but you don’t need to do this.

2. Using three or four toothpicks, hold the avocado pit slightly suspended over a glass jar filled with water. You want the bottom few centimetres to be submerged though.

3. Place on a windowsill and leave it alone!

4. After a few weeks, the pit should begin to crack and a root should start growing.

(Just like this!)

5. And that’s it! Leave the avocados for a few more weeks and the tree will start growing from top.

Once your plants have grown big enough, you can plant them in normal soil and wa-la! There you have your own avocado tree! Considering how easy these are to grow (and little effort you have to put into keeping them alive…), I highly recommend giving this little craft a go. And what else do I recommend? Having a watch of my houseplant tour!
